After seven years of debate the City of Clovis is one step closer to getting a Super Wal-Mart.
Hundreds packed a special meeting Monday night as the Clovis City Council approved an environmental impact report. The Wal-Mart would be built at Herndon and Highway 168.

Wal-Mart says the store will bring hundreds of jobs to Clovis and hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenue.

But those against the super store say it creates unfair competition for smaller mom and pop stores and will increase traffic and crime.

Peg Bos-Ferrara and opponent of the Wal-Mart project said, “They are so large they can just kill any opposition that they might have or competition. I believe in competition but it’s not an even field with Wal-Mart.”

Clovis Council Member Bob Whalen said, “I expect that this will then be put over to the courts once again and they’ll have an opportunity to review the work that has been done by the city council.

A date has not been set for when the case will go back to court.
