Wal-Mart one step closer in Clovis

A Wal-Mart Supercenter in Clovis is one step closer to becoming a reality.

At part two of a special meeting last night, the Clovis City Council voted 3 to 2 in favor of approving documents that would move the 490,000 square foot project forward.

The proposed location sits on 50 acres north of Herndon Ave., near Highway 168.  Though, according to news reports, there are still hurdles for the shopping center to jump. A lawsuit disputing the environmental impact report will go to court later this year. The suit questions the EIR’s review of water use and urban decay opponents say the completed project would cause. The outcome of that case could impact the completion of the shopping center.

Stipulations to the final project, such as reduced operating hours for Wal-Mart — 5 a.m. to midnight instead 24-hours — were also agreed upon by the council members as part of the project’s site plan.

Future plans for a Clovis Wal-Mart that exists on Shaw Avenue, if the Supercenter opens, weren't clear.
